● the definition of a word is always the story that creates the word for your character, so put a “define ______” in my ask to hear how they learned that concept. ●

there was no way to define such an all-encasing word for her. a word that
both gave her life and caused her to face her deepest fears so long ago.
when asked to define this concept, she raises her brows in surprise, breath
going shallow for a moment while she thinks.
“ Water is… “ she closes her eyes and hears the roar of the ocean’s waves,
the sound of her brother’s voice from underneath the surface ( how it cracks
and flows and breaks with the river current ), the sound of a bath running and
the feel of the warm condensation on her skin. when she breathes in, her blood
rises to the surface of her skin, reminds her of the cold chills in the South or the
feel of the icy waters on her little sun-kissed toes. the word reminds her of her
mother’s eyes and the power in her veins — and her desires to harness the water’s
strength and make it her own. the memories and feelings go from birth ( the broken-
ness of it all, the screams and the blood ) to present times ( a different broken-
ness, one of falls and climbs, but full of sweat and blood just as it was when she
entered this world ) and she can’t help but to smile. the tug of water affects her even
now as she speaks, brings her eyes open with a fierce gaze, a tilt of the head is given
before she completes her response, “ Water is life, “ she says, voice resounding,
“ Water is change. “ and this is all that needs to be said.
